Zoning Will Shape 2027 Governorship Race in Delta – Onyeme

UGHELLI/Nigeria: Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has reaffirmed the significance of zoning in shaping political power dynamics in the state, particularly in determining the governorship race.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency Forum at Oharisi Primary School, Ughelli, on Saturday, Onyeme said zoning remains a stabilizing factor in Delta’s politics and a key to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s continued dominance ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Deputy Governor stressed that the zoning arrangement, which ensures an equitable distribution of political offices among the state’s diverse ethnic groups, has strengthened the PDP’s grip on power.
“Delta is a very peaceful state, and since 1999, we were the first to embrace governorship rotation, and it has worked well for us,” Onyeme said. “All previous governors have served for eight years, and this time will not be different because Governor Oborevwori is working, and Deltans can see it.
“Governor Oborevwori is partnering with Julius Berger and other reputable construction firms to develop the state, and I can assure you that more projects will be executed across Delta.”
The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, echoed Onyeme’s sentiments, emphasizing that the Federal Constituency stands firmly behind Governor Oborevwori’s re-election bid.
“What we have done today is to show that the Federal Constituency is united in returning Governor Oborevwori to Government House in 2027,” Guwor said. “We are confident that PDP will win all eight local government areas in Delta Central, and with the massive support of Deltans, the Governor will win again.”
State PDP Chairman, Chief Solomon Arenyeka, said the party is fully prepared to reclaim the Federal Constituency in 2027, lauding Governor Oborevwori for his extensive infrastructural development across the state.
In their goodwill messages, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Prince Johnson Erijo, and the Chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata, commended the people of Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency for uniting in support of PDP. They maintained that Governor Oborevwori’s development strides had earned him unwavering support across the state.
Chairman of the Organising Committee and Ughelli North Local Government Chairman, Chief Jaro Egbo, described the forum’s formation as a crucial step toward fostering participatory democracy, good governance, and sustainable development in the constituency.
He urged party members to embrace unity and collaboration, calling on all stakeholders to work beyond party lines for the progress of the region. “Let us work together, irrespective of party affiliations, to build a constituency that stands as a model of progressive governance and inclusive leadership in Delta State and beyond,” Egbo said.
Those inaugurated into the forum include Olorogun John Oguma as Chairman, Chief Eddie Onosorhue as Deputy Chairman, Rt. Hon. Festus Agas as Secretary, Hon. George Oyefia as Treasurer, Hon. Henry Sakpra as Financial Secretary, Chief Vivian Ogheneovo as Woman Leader, Comrade Ejiro Hope as Youth Leader, and Olorogun Festus Ahon as Publicity Secretary. Others, including Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Chief Fred Majemite, and Chief Moses Odibo, were inaugurated as Advisers, Coordinators, and Ex-officio members.
Speaking on behalf of the Forum, Olorogun Oguma vowed that the group would work tirelessly to ensure Governor Oborevwori’s re-election in 2027.
“The Governor and his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, have worked diligently, and there is no vacancy in Government House, Asaba, until 2031,” Oguma declared.
The event’s climax was the passing of a vote of absolute confidence in Governor Oborevwori, a motion moved by Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, seconded by Ughelli North Local Government Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, and unanimously adopted by the gathering.
