The long-awaited election for the leadership of the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) must proceed as scheduled today, February 12, 2025. Any attempt to delay or subvert this democratic process will only deepen the leadership crisis that has long plagued the union. With the tenure of the current executive, led by Gen. Michael Ndubisi, set to end on February 13, 2025, it is imperative that a new leadership is duly elected to prevent a governance vacuum that could further undermine the progress of Ndokwa.
It is unfortunate that the NNU’s electoral process has once again been marred by disputes, largely due to a lack of effective communication between the electoral body, the leadership of the NNU, and the general Ndokwa populace. While concerns have been raised about certain irregularities, including constitutional errors and procedural lapses, these should not be used as an excuse to halt the election. Instead, a structured process should be immediately initiated to address and amend these constitutional errors to prevent the recurring turmoil that often accompanies NNU elections.
The election is of critical importance, not only to the people of Ndokwa but also to the region’s elected political officeholders. Regardless of their affiliations with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), or the Labour Party (LP), these leaders are first and foremost members of the Ndokwa community. While each party may have its preferred candidates, the focus should remain on electing individuals with the competence, vision, and integrity needed to lead the NNU towards a more prosperous future. The undue influence of political actors must not overshadow the union’s primary goal of fostering unity and sustainable development.
It is essential that the outcome of today’s election produces a leadership team capable of articulating and advocating for policies that will enhance the welfare of the Ndokwa people. The NNU must be led by individuals who possess the capacity to engage effectively with government institutions at all levels, as well as with development agencies that can bring tangible progress to the region. The union’s leadership should not be reduced to a political bargaining chip but must function as a strategic body committed to the socio-economic advancement of Ndokwa.
The concerns raised by the former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly regarding procedural transparency are valid and must be acknowledged. However, his protest should not be a reason to derail the election but rather a call for a fair hearing and institutional reforms. The democratic process must be allowed to run its course, and all stakeholders should ensure that their grievances are channeled through proper mechanisms without disrupting the union’s ability to function effectively.
As Ndokwa embarks on this crucial transition, we call on all stakeholders to sacrifice personal interests for the collective good. Whatever the outcome of today’s election, all parties must rally behind the new executive to drive the region’s development agenda forward. Ndokwa Reporters remains committed to advocating for policies that will strengthen community development and governance. It is our hope that this election will mark the beginning of a new era for the NNU, one that prioritizes unity, accountability, and the advancement of Ndokwa. Let us all work together to support whoever emerges victorious in today’s election for the betterment of our great community.
