Veteran Journalist Asiwaju Sola Adebayo Receives NUJ Award for Excellence in Delta State

WARRI/Nigeria: Veteran journalist and media consultant Asiwaju Sola Adebayo has been honored with an Award of Excellence by the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for his unwavering support of journalists and the advancement of journalism in the Niger Delta region.

The accolade was presented during the State Congress held at the Government House Annex in Edjeba, Warri. Adebayo, who served as bureau chief for renowned publications such as Vanguard, Punch, and National Mirror for over three decades, received the prestigious award from Comrade Churchill Oyowe, the State Council Chairman of NUJ, flanked by other officials.

In his address, Comrade Oyowe commended Adebayo for his active engagement in union activities and for advocating for the welfare of his fellow journalists. He highlighted Adebayo’s significant contributions to journalism in Delta State and the broader Niger Delta region, stating that the award was a well-deserved recognition, supported by chapels and members of the Delta Council.

Comrade Oyowe also praised Adebayo for his ongoing support of the union’s initiatives, even after his retirement from active practice. He disclosed that Adebayo generously offered to sponsor meals for journalists attending the Union’s first rotational congress in Warri, in line with his commitment to the profession.

Expressing gratitude for the honor, Asiwaju Adebayo described the Award of Excellence as a surprising gift. He emphasized that his support for journalism, a field in which he has dedicated over 30 years, aims to inspire his colleagues to excel in their work.

Adebayo further demonstrated his commitment by making additional donations for an upcoming NUJ project and encouraged journalists in the state to adhere to the ethics of their profession while remaining resilient in their public duties. He urged media practitioners to leverage modern journalistic tools to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving industry.

The award ceremony was attended by NUJ leaders, veteran journalists, and members from across the state, showcasing the unity and solidarity among the media community. Adebayo, a prolific and award-winning writer, also received accolades for his philanthropic efforts to support both retired and active journalists facing health challenges. He assured attendees of his continued support for the NUJ’s future initiatives, reaffirming his dedication to the advancement of journalism in Delta State.
