Urhobo Media Group Decries Death of Okuama President-General in Military Custody
UGHELLI/Nigeria: The Urhobo Media Practitioners and Advocacy Group have expressed shock and deep sadness over the tragic death of Pa James Oghoroko, President-General of Okuama town in Ewu Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Pa Oghoroko reportedly died while in Nigerian military detention, an incident the group described as a gross violation of human rights and an affront to the dignity of the Okuama people.
In a statement signed by Mr. Okpare Theophilus Onojeghen, Chief Omafume Amurun, and Comrade Shedrack Onitsha, the group strongly condemned the circumstances leading to Pa Oghoroko’s death and called for immediate accountability.
“We demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Pa Oghoroko’s death and insist that those responsible be held to account. This tragic loss underscores the urgent need for the Nigerian government to address the underlying issues fueling the conflict in Okuama Community and pursue a peaceful resolution,” the statement read.
The group also urged international human rights organizations, including the United Nations, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch, to take note of the alleged abuses in Okuama. They called on these bodies to pressure the Nigerian government to respect the human rights of the Okuama people and ensure justice for Pa Oghoroko.
Additionally, the Urhobo Media Practitioners demanded the immediate release of other detained Okuama leaders, including Professor Arthur Ekpekpor, who are reportedly being held in military custody without investigation or trial. “This arbitrary use of power is contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. If there are allegations against the detained leaders, they should be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction,” the group stated.
While condemning the killing of 17 military personnel in the region, the group called for an unbiased and holistic probe into the incident, urging justice for all involved.
The group extended its condolences to the family of Pa Oghoroko, the Okuama community, and the Ewu Kingdom. “May Pa Oghoroko’s death not be in vain but serve as a catalyst for justice and change in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
