UPU Youth Wing Demands Justice Over Alleged Police Brutality Leading to Paul Obukowho’s Death

UGHELLI/Nigeria: The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Youth Wing, Worldwide, has condemned in strong terms the alleged unlawful arrest, brutalization, and tragic death of Master Paul Obukowho at the hands of officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Delta State Police Command.
In a statement issued over the weekend by its Ethnic President, Comrade Umukoro Efemena, the youth body described the incident as a gross violation of human rights and vowed to pursue justice through all legal means.
“Paul Obukowho and his brothers were unjustly detained in Asaba on March 26, 2025. What began as an arbitrary arrest escalated into severe physical abuse, extortion, and medical negligence, ultimately leading to Paul’s untimely demise at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba on March 29, 2025,” the statement read.
The group decried what it described as a growing trend of police brutality and human rights violations in Nigeria, calling for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding Obukowho’s detention and death. It demanded the immediate suspension and prosecution of the officers involved, as well as a public commitment from the Nigerian Police Force to take responsibility for the incident.
“The Nigerian Police Force must set up a special team to visit the deceased’s family and offer the necessary support. Anything short of this would be seen as an endorsement of injustice and impunity,” the statement added.
While urging Urhobo youths to remain calm and law-abiding, the UPU Youth Wing called on human rights organizations and well-meaning Nigerians to join the demand for justice, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable if found guilty.
