Uphold Ethics, Delta Speaker Charges Journalists
ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has challenged journalists in the state to uphold the ethics of their profession and resist the temptation of pecuniary interests in their reportage.
Guwor, addressing Assembly Correspondents during a thank-you visit to his office at the resumed plenary, decried the infiltration of journalism by quacks who engage in malicious reporting for ulterior motives. He called on the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to intensify efforts to sanitize the profession.
“Some within the profession focus on immediate rewards, resorting to blackmail and unethical practices. However, genuine professionals who uphold integrity will ultimately be rewarded. The ethics of journalism must remain your guide,” Guwor emphasized.
The Speaker praised the Assembly Correspondents for their balanced reporting and urged them to continue serving the public with professionalism. “You are here to give your best to the people. Do so with diligence and without bitterness or greed. People are watching, and your good work can open doors to greater opportunities,” he said.
Reiterating his commitment to press freedom, Guwor assured journalists that the 8th Assembly under his leadership would remain open and accessible. He encouraged them to seek clarifications on issues before going to press to ensure accurate reporting.
Earlier, the leader of the Assembly Correspondents, Mr. Andrew Ikehi, expressed gratitude to the Speaker for his support and collaboration during the past year. Ikehi highlighted the Speaker’s efforts in fostering a harmonious relationship between lawmakers and the media, including the unprecedented “Breakfast with CPS to Mr. Speaker” event.
He assured the Speaker of the correspondents’ unwavering commitment to fair and accurate reportage, pledging continued cooperation for a productive working relationship.
