Unidel VC Urges Ika Sons and Daughters to Drive Development in Ekwuoma

EKWUOMA/Nigeria: The Vice Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor, Prof. Stella Chiemeke, has called on Ika sons and daughters at home and abroad to contribute meaningfully towards the development of the Ika Nation.

Prof. Chiemeke made this appeal during the 2024 Annual Congress of the Ekwuoma Progressive Union (EPU) held at the Ekwuoma Town Hall in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Delivering a lecture titled “Ekwuoma in the Emerging Communities of Ika Nation: Challenges, Prospects, and Critical Strides for Development,” Prof. Chiemeke emphasized the need to reposition Ekwuoma within the evolving Ika Nation by addressing critical issues that foster sustainable development.

Describing Ekwuoma as a kingdom steeped in rich cultural heritage, strengthened by agricultural practices and craftsmanship, and bolstered by strong community ties, she lauded its resilience amidst challenges. However, she noted that the kingdom faces pressing issues, including infrastructural deficits, youth migration, brain drain, and economic disparities.

“The Ika Nation is undergoing significant transformation due to urbanization, technological advancements, and globalization,” she remarked. “While these factors create new opportunities, they also introduce complex challenges that require strategic and inclusive solutions.”

Prof. Chiemeke stressed the importance of infrastructural development, highlighting its role in boosting economic activities, improving market access, and enhancing residents’ quality of life. She urged the EPU and especially the youth to form partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations to advocate for infrastructure improvements.

Addressing economic disparities, she called for inclusive growth strategies that prioritize marginalized segments of the community to ensure equitable development.

EPU National Chairman, Apostle David Chinedu Onwualu, commended Prof. Chiemeke for her insightful lecture, emphasizing the Union’s commitment to fostering development in Ekwuoma. He announced plans for a cultural fiesta, fashion parade, and book launch at the next EPU Congress, where awards will be presented to distinguished Ekwuoma indigenes.

The immediate past President General of EPU, Sir Chief Augustine Nwokolo, highlighted the Union’s dedication to reviving and stabilizing EPU branches nationwide, supervising their activities, and establishing new branches within and beyond Nigeria.

The event featured the adoption of resolutions from various committees, reports from the EPU National President, and donations and goodwill messages from attendees, marking it as a significant milestone for the community.
