UBEC, SUBEB Foster Early Agricultural Engagement Among Pupils
UMUNEDE/Nigeria: To nurture interest in agriculture among the younger generation, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) have undertaken steps to expose students to farming and its value chains.
SUBEB Chairman, Hon. (Chief) Samuel Mariere, led the initiative, taking pupils from public primary and junior secondary schools in Delta North on an excursion to Royal Farm Yard, Umunede, Ika North East Local Government Area. He was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Chief George Oyefia, and other officials.

Speaking during the visit, Mariere said, “Agriculture holds immense potential for transforming our economy. This program aims to spark interest in farming among our children and show them the opportunities it presents.”
The excursion follows a similar visit for pupils in Delta Central and South to Ophromo Farms in Ughelli North. Mariere commended the federal and state governments for their collaborative funding of programs supporting basic education.
Chief Oyefia, addressing the students, described agriculture as a wealth-generating endeavor that requires minimal startup capital. “At 11 years old, I started farming while in the village. Agriculture has immense potential, and I urge you to take advantage of it,” he said.

Farm Manager Mr. Clinton Egiato guided the students through various sections of the farm, showcasing livestock and crop operations. He revealed that the farm’s daily earnings from egg sales run into millions, further underscoring agriculture’s profitability.
Students and pupils expressed gratitude for the opportunity, pledging to explore farming as a career path while acknowledging its role in food security and economic growth.
