OBIARUKU/Nigeria: In a bid to bolster grassroots support and extend the dividends of democracy to its faithfuls, the Ukwuani Local Government Area Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched an ambitious empowerment programme set to run until 2027. Spearheaded by the Honorable Commissioner for Finance, Delta State, Sir Fidelis Tillije, the initiative aims to empower supporters across the area’s 10 wards on a monthly basis.
The programme, originally slated to commence in March 2025, encountered a brief delay but was formally inaugurated on Good Friday, April 18, 2025. At the launch event, held amidst a gathering of party leaders including Council Chairman Bar Possible Ajede and the Immediate Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Ochor Ochor, beneficiaries from the first two batches received a substantial sum of ₦100,000 each.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sir Fidelis Tillije emphasized that the selection of beneficiaries was meticulously carried out in collaboration with ward chairmen and local government executives. “I had no direct input in the selection process,” he stated. “The LGA Executives worked closely with the Ward Executives to identify deserving recipients.”
Furthermore, he urged councilors in the area to enhance their productivity and desist from undue complacency, stressing the importance of reciprocating the support they receive. “We should cultivate a culture of giving,” Sir Tillije remarked. “Leadership isn’t solely about financial prowess but also about positively impacting lives. If you hold a position and fail to uplift others, perhaps you’re not meant to occupy that office.”
The Commissioner called on party faithfuls to remain steadfast in their support for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration and the PDP.
“It is disheartening,” he added, “when beneficiaries of such support later criticize the party. Let us continue to stand united and uphold the principles of solidarity that define our great party.” He concluded.
Meanwhile, Mr Solomon Osakwe, Chairman of the Ukwuani PDP Chapter, commended the Commissioner and other party supporters for their dedication to grassroots empowerment. He expressed disappointment at reports of disloyalty from some quarters, highlighting that the party had consistently supported its members over the years.
He further stated that there other planned empowerment by some other leaders of the party in the area. And assured the members that the party had never abandoned any of its own.
The PDP’s initiative in Ukwuani LGA marks a significant step towards consolidating support and fostering community development under Governor Oborevwori’s leadership.
