“The Bitter Feminist”: New Documentary Exposes Gender Struggles in Nigeria

LAGOS/Nigeria: HardFacts Studios is set to unveil a groundbreaking documentary that explores the systemic oppression, stereotypes, and challenges women face in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa. Created by Daniel Chukwuemeka and Ijeoma Chinonyerem, the series sheds light on feminism’s intersectionality through the harrowing yet powerful story of Ringret, a young woman from Northern Nigeria who survived rape and forced marriage.
Slated to premiere at the iRep Festival in Lagos in March 2025, The Bitter Feminist serves as a bold call for a radical re-evaluation of societal structures and gender inequities. Co-creator Ijeoma Chinonyerem emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This is about giving voice to women whose stories are often unheard and challenging the narratives that sustain inequality. We hope The Bitter Feminist sparks conversations and inspires real change.”

The five-episode series takes an unflinching look at the lives of women who identify as feminists, highlighting their resistance against oppressive traditions and societal norms. Ringret’s journey is at the heart of the narrative, embodying the resilience and courage of women fighting for their rights.
Through candid interviews and immersive storytelling, The Bitter Feminist examines cultural, religious, and socio-economic barriers to gender equality. Each episode tackles pressing issues, including pervasive misogyny, the consequences of child marriage, restrictive gender roles, the complexities of consent, and the realities of transactional sex. The documentary not only exposes these injustices but also celebrates the unwavering determination of women challenging the status quo.
Produced by Isaac Newton Akah and directed by Priye Diri, The Bitter Feminist amplifies the voices of accomplished women, aiming to leave viewers empowered and inspired to drive societal change.
