Social Critic Lambasts Retired General for Misguided Remarks on Delta State Killings

WARRI/Nigeria: A recent statement by retired Major-General Tajudeen Olanrewaju has stirred controversy in the Niger Delta region, particularly in Delta State, drawing sharp criticism from social critic Zik Gbemre.

Olanrewaju’s comments linking the killing of soldiers in Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, to oil bunkering have been labeled as misguided and diversionary.

According to Gbemre, the ex-General’s assertions lack factual basis and fail to address the root causes of the conflict. He emphasized that Okuama Community possesses no oil or gas assets, debunking Olanrewaju’s claims of a connection between the killings and illegal bunkering activities.

Gbemre criticized Olanrewaju’s call for enhanced military presence in the region, arguing that it overlooks the importance of community engagement and socioeconomic development. He highlighted the underrepresentation of natives from oil-producing communities in decision-making roles within the oil industry, stressing the need for greater inclusion and empowerment of local communities.

Furthermore, Gbemre raised serious allegations against the military, accusing them of complicity in illegal bunkering activities and collusion with oil companies. He condemned the use of military force in Okuama Community, calling for an end to the violence and urging for peaceful resolution and humanitarian assistance for displaced residents.

In response to Olanrewaju’s remarks, Gbemre called for accountability and transparency in addressing the socioeconomic challenges facing the Niger Delta region. He emphasized the importance of genuine dialogue and sustainable solutions to promote lasting peace and prosperity in the area.

As tensions escalate in the aftermath of the killings, Gbemre’s critique serves as a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive measures that prioritize the well-being and interests of local communities in the Niger Delta.
