OGWASHI-UKU/Nigeria: Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, the distinguished representative of Delta North Senatorial District, has once again demonstrated his commitment to youth development and sports promotion with the launch of the Anioma Unity Football Tournament.

The competition kicked off in spectacular fashion on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Austin JJ Okocha Stadium in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South, with Ika South triumphing over Oshimili North in a thrilling 2-1 encounter.

Renowned for his philanthropic endeavors and passion for nurturing young talents, Senator Nwoko organized the tournament to foster unity and highlight the football prowess of Delta North. His vision for youth empowerment through sports was on full display, with the event attracting scouts, community leaders, and fans from across the region.

The opening match saw a breathtaking performance from substitute Destiny Isioma, who emerged as the hero for Ika South. After a goalless first half marked by tactical brilliance, Isioma ignited the game, scoring two stunning goals within 30 minutes of his introduction. Oshimili North briefly leveled the score through Solomon Onate, but Isioma’s second goal in the 75th minute sealed the victory, securing Ika South’s spot in the next round.

Collins Okonkwo, Senior Special Assistant to Senator Nwoko on Youth Matters, praised the players’ determination and skills, describing the match as “a showcase of talent and sportsmanship.” Okonkwo emphasized the tournament’s goal to discover and develop young footballers, providing them with opportunities for national and international exposure. “This is more than a tournament; it’s a platform for creating the next generation of sports icons,” he said.

Oshimili South advanced to the semi-finals following the disqualification of Ndokwa West for misconduct, adding to the anticipation for the next stage of the competition.

The Anioma Unity Football Tournament features teams from all nine Local Government Areas of Delta North, culminating in a grand finale at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba, on December 29, 2024. The semi-finals, scheduled for December 23, promise to intensify the competition as teams vie for the coveted title.
