UGHELLI/Nigeria: As the rainy season draws near day by day, fears have gripped residents of Robert Aloy Street, off Uloho Avenue, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, and the only question in their minds is, “when will development gets to the area?
According to some of the residents who spoke to our correspondent recently, they likened the area to an ugly lady, beautifully adorned during festival, whose appearance deceptively attracted young suitors, whom, upon discovery of her ugliness, were made to abandon her after the festival.
One of them, Pastor Sunny Lucky, said that the street, which is about 5km long, was the most under developed place in Ughelli, adding that there was no drainage and no tarred road, and making it difficult for residents to access it during the rainy season.
Pastor Sunny Lucky disclosed that residents who packed into the area during the dry season were forced to pack out when the rains begun, with the complaint that they never knew that the area was so bad.
He said it was difficult to go out or come in as no Keke nor motorcycle ply the area during the raining season, except for those who have personal vehicle and in most cases, their cars often develop fault due to the bad road, saying that life was always unbearable during the raining season.
Revd Harry Odede, who has a church in the area, said that the bad road had affected the growth and development of the church negatively.
Odede that said most of his members were forced to park out of the area and once they go away, they do nott come back while some few ones who managed to come were irregular in attending church services.
Another resident, Mr Joseph Arhagba, said that there was nothing good to say about the area, just as he appealed to the Delta State Government to construct a good drainage system in the area to ameliorate the suffering of the people.
Arhagba added that people often fall sick during the rainy season because of the mosquito infested water.
