KOKO/Nigeria: Some concerned residents in Koko, headquarters of Warri North Local Government Area, on Sunday prevented what could have been termed a disastrous inferno, from razing down completely one of the hostel buildings at Iwere College.
The fire which would have extended to other buildings, if not for the quick response by the Warri North Local Government Council Vice Chairman, Hon. Solomon Milkie, and some members of the community, was said to have started in the afternoon.
Milkie, who was a Red Cross responder, at the incident, commended the council chairman, Honourable Smart Asekutu for making available fire extinguishers, which he said, helped in controlling the inferno.
Speaking on the incident, the Principal of the school, Dr Jonathan Chukwuemeka, said that the news of the incident got to him in the evening, adding that he was grateful for swift response by the council chairman and members of the community for bringing the situation under control.
One Mr Charles Loko, who also narrated the incident, said that a distress call was made to them at 2.00 pm that one of the hostels in the college was on fire.
“When we got the call that a building at Iwere College was on fire, we immediately swung into action, and was able to stem further spread,” he said.
At the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, as investigations were ongoing to determine its root cause.
It was, however, observed that Iwere College Hostel was partially burnt down.
