Reparations and Economic Growth: Nwoko, Hazelle Chart a New Course for Africa-Caribbean Unity

ABUJA/Nigeria: Delta North Senator and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriations, Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, on Thursday welcomed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriations, Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, to a private meeting at his Abuja office in the National Assembly.

The meeting addressed key issues surrounding reparations for Africa and its diaspora, alongside prospects for strengthening economic cooperation between Nigeria and the Caribbean.

Senator Nwoko, renowned for his unwavering commitment to justice and equity for Africa, described reparations as “long overdue and non-negotiable.” He reiterated that nations that benefited from the transatlantic slave trade owe Africa not only an apology but actionable restitution. “This is a matter of justice and historical correction,” the senator asserted during the discussion.

Ambassador Hazelle, a distinguished diplomat and former CEO of the St. Kitts Investment Promotion Agency, affirmed her alignment with Senator Nwoko’s stance. She characterized reparations as a shared cause, highlighting that St. Kitts and Nevis has been actively involved in global dialogues on the issue. “Our histories are intertwined, and our struggles are mutual,” she stated, expressing solidarity with Africa’s quest for redress.

Beyond reparations, the meeting explored avenues for economic collaboration between Nigeria and the Caribbean. Senator Nwoko identified tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy as sectors with significant potential for partnerships that could foster economic growth and create opportunities in both regions.

While economic prospects were discussed, reparations remained the focal point of the meeting. Both leaders stressed the importance of African nations and their diaspora presenting a united and coordinated front on the issue. Senator Nwoko praised Caribbean nations for their proactive approach to reparations and urged for stronger cooperation. “Together, we can amplify our voices and achieve the justice that has been long denied,” he concluded.

The meeting underscored the shared vision between Africa and the Caribbean in seeking reparations and building a future grounded in economic empowerment and historical equity.
