Renowned Journalist Sola Adebayo Establishes Welfare Endowment Fund for NUJ Warri Chapter

EFFURN/Nigeria: In an inspiring move to uplift members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Warri Correspondents Chapel, distinguished journalist and Chief Executive Officer of Lawal Iyanda Farms Limited, Mr. Sola Adebayo, has launched a Welfare Endowment Fund worth ₦25 million. The initiative, which began on October 1, 2024, with an initial target of ₦10 million, exceeded expectations thanks to the generous contributions of friends and associates.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony on Tuesday evening, Mr. Adebayo urged journalists to cultivate meaningful relationships through their profession and uphold the principles of journalism. “Journalism allows you to connect with people; make friends and sustain those relationships,” he said. “Develop core friendships and avoid sacrificing the ultimate for the immediate. I appeal to you all to remain responsible.”

Rt. Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, Member representing Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, presented a dummy cheque on behalf of Adebayo. Ereyitomi lauded the initiative, emphasising the importance of service to humanity. “What we are doing here today is significant because it impacts lives,” he remarked. “Service to humanity is key. We must all reflect on the legacies we leave behind.” He encouraged members of the Chapel to manage the fund prudently, noting that its effective use would inspire further support.

Hon. Ben Eteanabene, representing Okpe, Sapele, and Uvwie Federal Constituency, highlighted Adebayo’s unwavering commitment to truth and compassion. Recalling their shared history at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Eteanabene described the fund as “a process, not an endpoint,” and called on Chapel members to ensure the money serves genuine purposes.

Similarly, Hon. Donald Ojogo, a journalist and representative for Ilaje/Ese Odo Federal Constituency, praised Adebayo for his generosity. Ojogo extolled journalism as a profession that opens doors, enabling practitioners to forge meaningful connections. “Journalism gives you access to key decision-makers, from ministers to other influential figures,” he observed.

NUJ Delta State Council Chairman, Mr. Churchill Oyowe, urged Chapel members to avoid internal divisions over the fund’s disbursement. “Let this money not cause discord. It should revolve for the benefit of everyone,” he advised, applauding Mr. Adebayo’s vision.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Victor Okpomor, Chairman of the NUJ Warri Correspondents Chapel, expressed gratitude to Adebayo, describing him as “a beacon of excellence” in journalism. He commended Adebayo’s efforts in transforming the profession in Warri and beyond.

The event not only celebrated the philanthropic gesture of Mr. Adebayo but also underscored the critical role of journalism in shaping society and fostering relationships. Through this fund, Adebayo has set a sterling example of how professionals can contribute meaningfully to the welfare of their colleagues while leaving a legacy of compassion and service.
