SAPELE/Nigeria: In a vibrant display of cultural pride and unity, the 2023 Ukwuani Day Celebration held in Sapele, Delta State, became a platform for esteemed figures to advocate for the preservation of the Ukwuani heritage both locally and across borders.
Ogbuefi John Okpu, a revered community leader from Umuebu in the Ukwuani Local Government Area, emphasized the significance of safeguarding the traditions and culture of the Ukwuani people, underscoring its pivotal role in nurturing the younger generation.
“The preservation of our traditions and culture is pivotal for the prosperity of our youth,” Ogbuefi Okpu expressed, reflecting on the importance of the Ukwuani Cultural Day Celebration as a testament to the richness of their heritage.
Key personalities from the Ukwuani community, such as Chief Friday Daddy Amudo, the pioneer President of Ukwuani People residing in Sapele, Mrs. Mary Obodo, Mrs. Olukwu Kate, and Mrs. Joy Ogana, echoed the sentiment. They implored parents to actively impart the native language and instill pride in the Ukwuani culture among their children.
“Embrace our culture; it is our identity,” they emphasized, highlighting the peace-loving nature of the Ukwuani people, regardless of their geographical locations.
Central to their messages was the call for unity and solidarity among all Ukwuani indigenes, emphasizing that their collective strength hinged upon their cohesion. Expressing concern, they questioned the dwindling encouragement of embracing cultural practices among the younger generation and urged a revival of these essential customs.
The celebration, hosted at the Okpe Grammar School in Sapele, witnessed the active participation of the Ukwuani Association’s executive officers and a vast assembly of Ukwuani residents in Sapele. The event was a testament to the fervent commitment to preserving and celebrating the vibrant Ukwuani identity.
As the festivities concluded, the resounding call to embrace, preserve, and champion the Ukwuani culture reverberated, heralding a renewed determination to safeguard their unique heritage.
