Power Struggle Deepens in Delta State APC as Party Chairman Resumes Amidst Leadership Dispute
By Emmanuel Enebeli
ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) finds itself mired in a fresh wave of controversy as two factional leaders continue to lay claim to the position of acting State Chairman. Amidst this unfolding drama, the party’s substantive Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, who had been on medical leave, has announced his return, effectively dismissing both claimants.
The crisis began with the emergence of Chief Paulinus Akpeki from Delta Central and Barrister Frances Obigbor from Delta North, each asserting authority over the party in Sobotie’s absence. Chief Akpeki’s claim was backed by the State Working Committee (SWC), while Barrister Obigbor received the endorsement of the Delta North Chapter. However, the eight APC local government chairmen from Delta Central openly rejected Akpeki’s appointment, citing constitutional violations.
Adding to the chaos, Elder Sobotie, in a letter dated 2nd December 2024, declared his return to office following a successful surgery. Addressed to the SWC, the terse communication stated:
“This is to inform you that having gone through a successful surgery, I have resumed my duties as State Chairman of APC effective today, the 2nd December 2024. I thank you all for your support and prayers.”
The announcement effectively nullifies the appointments of both Akpeki and Obigbor, leaving the party in a precarious state of uncertainty.
Party insiders suggest that the ongoing conflict has exposed deep-seated divisions within the Delta APC, raising concerns about its ability to maintain cohesion ahead of future political contests. Critics within the party have described the situation as a “leadership crisis fuelled by personal ambitions,” warning that it could undermine the APC’s credibility in the state.
Meanwhile, Elder Sobotie’s abrupt return has left many questioning the next steps for the party. Political observers suggest that reconciliation efforts may be necessary to repair fractured relationships within the APC’s ranks.
As the dust settles, it remains unclear how the APC in Delta State will navigate this turbulent chapter, with party members and stakeholders anxiously awaiting the resolution of its leadership woes.
