Perennial Flooding: DESOPADEC Commence Work at Obiaruku Market

OBIARUKU/Nigeria:  As a continuation efforts of bringing development to every part of the state, the promise by the state government through the Executive Director Social Services on the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas development Commission, DESOPADEC, Hon Christopher Ochor Ochor, that the perennial problem of flooding, that had affected the Obiaruku Modern market will be taken care of before the next raining season, is almost been fulfilled as work had commenced with the moving to site by a team of Engineers and Surveyors led by Engr. Tony Okuwe to understudy the problems while the existing drainage network has failed to discharge water from the market.

According to a statement from the office of the Executive Director, the team of experts will carry out a comprehensive study of the existing drainage network, within and outside the market, and from the result of the study will carry out the necessary correction such as breaking and reconstruction of some sections of the existing drainage to allow for free flow of water.

However, observation from a visit to the market showed that, many sections of the existing drainage were blocked and water cannot freely flow to the drainage point.

It could be recalled that recently, the Executive Director paid a working visit to the palace of the Okpala Uku, , where he met with the leaders of the community to seek for their support and informed them of the efforts of the state government through the commission to solve the perennial problem of the market.

The Obiaruku market is the only major market in Ukwuani Local Government Area, and serves not only the people of the LGA, but also people from the neighbouring LGA’s and Edo state. The market has a major problem of flooding which had caused untold hardship to the traders and visitors, as millions of goods had be lost as a result of the perennial flooding.
