PDP Backs Rivers Local Government Elections …..Condemns Police Action
ABUJA/Nigeria: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the people of Rivers State to assert their sovereignty and constitutional rights by voting in the upcoming Local Government Area elections scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024.
The party emphasised the importance of mass participation in this electoral process, stating that the control of democratic activities in Rivers State belongs to the people and should not be compromised by any individual or group.
In a press statement released on October 4, 2024, signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, the party reiterated that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is fully prepared to conduct the elections, possessing all necessary operational materials to ensure a smooth process. The party cited a recent Supreme Court ruling, asserting that no court under the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2022 has the authority to halt elections.
For clarity, the PDP referenced Section 84(15) of the Electoral Act, which states, “Nothing in this section shall empower the courts to stop the holding of primaries or general elections, under the Act pending the determination of a suit.”
The party strongly condemned attempts by the police, allegedly under the influence of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to disrupt the elections. They expressed concern over reported police interventions at RSIEC facilities, describing these actions as a direct attack on democracy and the rule of law. The PDP noted that such attempts were met with resistance from the citizens of Rivers State, who are determined to express their will through the electoral process.
The PDP reassured the police and the APC that the citizens of Rivers State are peace-loving and law-abiding, yet they will not tolerate any efforts to stifle their right to choose their leaders, particularly at the local government level.
The party further called on both Nigerians and the international community to hold the APC and the Inspector General of Police accountable should any breakdown of law and order occur during this critical election period. They urged the Inspector General to fulfil his constitutional duty by ensuring a secure environment for the elections, emphasising that his role should prioritise the interests of democracy and national stability.
The PDP expressed its unwavering support for the Rivers State government and the citizens in their quest to elect representatives who will govern the 23 Local Government Areas in accordance with the law.
