AGBOR/Nigeria: In a poignant tribute, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), expressed profound sadness over the sudden and untimely passing of Chief Lawrence Onyeche, a revered palace chief and the incumbent President General of the Agbor Community Union (ACU). Ebie remarked that Onyeche was a paragon of statesmanship, deeply committed to the development of the Agbor community.
Speaking on Tuesday, Ebie conveyed his condolences, acknowledging the magnitude of the loss not only to Onyeche’s immediate family but also to the entire Agbor Community and the broader Ika Nation. He highlighted Onyeche’s dedication to preserving Ika culture and tradition, noting that the late President General harbored a fervent desire to foster a culturally vibrant Agbor Nation characterized by peace, unity, and justice.
Ebie noted the significant strides made by the Agbor community under Onyeche’s leadership from 2016 until his passing, attributing the achievements to his unwavering promotion of peace and unity among various sociocultural organizations within Agbor. He emphasized that Onyeche’s legacy loomed large, leaving behind a leadership vacuum that would be challenging to fill.
Furthermore, the NDDC Chairman underscored Onyeche’s multifaceted contributions beyond community development and cultural promotion. Onyeche’s distinguished career included service as a civil servant with the Delta State government, culminating in his retirement as a director. He also held positions such as President General of the Delta State Cooperative Federation and membership in the National Cooperative Movement of Nigeria.
Recalling a memorable interaction, Ebie recounted Onyeche’s visit to his residence in Agbor alongside executive members of ACU and prominent Agbor indigenes in January 2023. Onyeche’s congratulatory message during the visit reflected admiration for Ebie’s accomplishments, citing his exemplary service in the Delta State government and expressing confidence in his promising political future.
Former Commissioner and Secretary to the Delta State government, Ebie, lamented the profound loss experienced by the people of Agbor and the wider Ika nation following Onyeche’s passing. However, he urged everyone to find solace in Onyeche’s enduring legacy while offering prayers for the repose of his soul.
