Oyo State Partners with EIDU to Boost Digital Literacy in Basic Education

IBADAN/Nigeria: The Oyo State government has reaffirmed its dedication to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals for education, emphasizing collaboration with key stakeholders in the basic education sector. This commitment was reiterated by the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, during a sensitization training for staff held in Ibadan.

The training, organized by EIDU, a Germany-based education firm, introduced a digital literacy program aimed at transforming the education system in Oyo State. EIDU, which stands for “Individual Education,” has chosen Oyo and Katsina as pilot states for its digital learning initiative in Nigeria.

During the event, Dr. Adeniran highlighted the significance of the EIDU Digital Learning Programme, stating that it aligns with the state’s efforts to strengthen foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. He noted that the program would further the government’s aim of making basic education learners digitally proficient.

“Our goal is that by 2030, Oyo State will have established a robust digital learning system, which will have a transformational impact not just on the state, but on the entire nation,” Dr. Adeniran said.

He also revealed that the digital learning initiative, which commenced on September 5, 2024, is designed to build e-learning and digital capacity within the basic education system in Oyo State.

As part of the program, 25 staff members from the board were trained, along with selected head teachers, class teachers, and quality assurance officers from Ona-Ara, Iseyin, Ogbomoso South, and Ibadan South West. The training was aimed at equipping participants with the digital skills necessary for the upcoming academic session.

Dr. Adeniran praised EIDU for its role in this groundbreaking initiative, stating, “This intervention will significantly enhance the way we teach our pupils, ensuring that they are better prepared for the future.”

Mr. Silas Armandos, the Team Lead for Operations at EIDU, explained that the program provides both learners and teachers with access to curriculum-aligned content, allowing for real-time feedback on student progress. He revealed that each trained participant returned to their classrooms equipped with Android phones and relevant teaching materials to implement the program.

“Over 300,000 learners have already been registered on the EIDU platform,” said Armandos, a Kenyan. “The global learning crisis can be addressed through platforms like EIDU, where content is tailored to the specific curriculum of each country.”

Mr. Ignatius Attah, EIDU’s Team Lead for Government Relations, echoed this sentiment, stating that the program would be a game-changer for education in Oyo State. He emphasized that the literacy initiative would not only improve learning outcomes but also lay a strong foundation for the future of education in the state.

The event also had in attendance the Executive Secretary of OYOSUBEB, Mrs. Olaide Ladipo, alongside directors, education secretaries, and quality assurance officers, all of whom expressed optimism about the transformative potential of the EIDU program for the state’s education sector.
