Osakwe Backs Maris Lecture on Local Governance, Says Topic Long Overdue

ASABA/Nigeria: Former Delta State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Azuka Osakwe, has commended the organisers of the 2025 edition of the Maris Annual Public Service Lecture, describing the selected topic, “Local Governance and Sustainable Development”, as timely and long overdue for public discourse.
Speaking over the weekend in reaction to the theme, Osakwe noted that such conversations should have taken place much earlier, given the pressing need to reposition local government administration for national growth. “We would have had that discussion long ago,” he said, expressing optimism that the lecture would generate meaningful insights and draw robust participation.
He added that empowering local governments through improved funding, capacity building, and deeper citizen engagement is vital for sustainable community development. “Empowering local governments, addressing funding and skill-building needs, and promoting citizen involvement will help our communities thrive,” Osakwe stated, while wishing the organisers a successful outing.
Another stakeholder, who responded to the upcoming event, insisted that the lecture is a must-attend for all council chairmen across the state, describing it as a necessary step toward implementing a bottom-up approach to governance, which could serve as a catalyst for sustainable development at the grassroots.
The event, scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, will feature Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as Special Guest of Honour, with his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, serving as Guest of Honour.
Renowned technocrat, Sir Patrick Ejidoh, will deliver the keynote address, while a panel of discussants comprising former House of Representatives member, Hon. Ben Ibakpa; Delta State Commissioners Charles Aniagwu (Public Information) and the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads); Mrs. Mabel Magbulu, Founder of Eagles Height Properties; and Hon. Vincent Oyibode, Chairman of Udu Local Government Council, will lead the conversation.
The Obi of Aboh Kingdom, His Imperial Majesty, Obi Oputa III, will chair the event, while Prof. Kemi Emina, the Odiega of Ebu, will serve as moderator during the discussion segment of the lecture, which is scheduled to begin promptly at 12 noon.
Organisers say the Maris Annual Public Service Lecture remains a free and open platform dedicated to fostering informed dialogue on issues of public interest and governance.
