Oluremi Tinubu Flags Off Renewed Hope Health Initiative in Delta, Pledges Support for Midwives

ASABA/Nigeria: Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to complementing the Federal Government’s efforts in making healthcare accessible, available, and affordable for Nigerians.
Speaking in Asaba, Delta State, on Tuesday at the presentation of 10,000 professional kits—comprising scrubs and crocs—to midwives in the South-South geopolitical zone, Senator Tinubu emphasized the importance of frontline healthcare workers in ensuring improved maternal and child health outcomes. She disclosed that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s ongoing training of 120,000 healthcare workers, with 60,470 already trained.
The First Lady lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s support of the programme and announced that 2,000 women in Delta State would each receive N50,000 to recapitalize their businesses as part of the initiative’s economic empowerment scheme.
“In 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative made significant progress in agriculture, economic empowerment, education, healthcare, and social welfare. Today, we are flagging off the distribution of 10,000 professional kits to midwives across Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Rivers states, with Delta State serving as the chief host,” she said.
Senator Tinubu revealed that the initiative had procured 60,000 branded crocs and scrubs as incentives to encourage midwives, with each geopolitical zone receiving 10,000 kits. She noted that the donation was made possible through the support of an anonymous global partner committed to improving health outcomes in Nigeria.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, in his remarks, expressed appreciation to the First Lady for selecting Delta State as the host for the South-South leg of the programme. He described the initiative as a morale booster for healthcare workers, noting that midwives remain indispensable to the nation’s healthcare system.
“The midwives were everyone’s go-to for quick medical services, and their role is even more crucial today, given the increasing pressure on our healthcare system. They are essential to maternal and child healthcare, and I commend the First Lady for prioritizing their welfare,” Oborevwori said.
He noted that the provision of scrubs and crocs would enhance the safety and professionalism of midwives, adding that the initiative aligned with the administration’s goal of improving healthcare delivery in Delta State.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates by ensuring skilled birth attendants handle deliveries.
Also speaking, the wife of the Delta State governor and founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, praised Senator Tinubu for her dedication to women and children’s well-being in healthcare, agriculture, and social investment. She assured the First Lady of the unwavering support of Deltans in achieving the initiative’s objectives.
