Ogwashi-Uku Dam Crucial to 17 Communities, Delta Governor Tells FG

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has called on the Federal Government to expedite the completion of the Ogwashi-Uku Dam project, emphasizing its crucial economic impact on local communities and the success of an ongoing Agro-Industrial Park in the area.
The governor made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority, Dr. Femi Adekanbi, and his team at Government House, Asaba.
Congratulating Dr. Adekanbi on his appointment, Governor Oborevwori urged the River Basin Authority to prioritize the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, expressing optimism that the project could be completed by October. He noted that its completion would resolve the long-standing water supply problems in Ogwashi-Uku and 16 other surrounding communities.
“We have a major Agro-Industrial Park project in the area, and the dam is critical to its success,” the governor stated.
Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to development, disclosing the recent approval for the establishment of water sanitation departments across all 25 local government areas of the state.
On other issues raised by the Authority, including local employment and the Ute-Okpu water challenge, the governor assured that the concerns would be thoroughly considered.
Speaking on security, Oborevwori maintained that Delta remains one of the most peaceful states in the South-South region. He cited the presence of expatriates and business activities across the state as proof of the stable security atmosphere.
“Security challenges are not peculiar to Delta, but we have made significant progress. Some of our successes are not publicized to protect sensitive operations,” he added.
Governor Oborevwori also praised the Authority for its local garri production initiative and encouraged expansion to benefit rural communities. “We will support you to succeed, because your success is our success,” he said.
In his remarks, Dr. Adekanbi applauded the Oborevwori-led administration for its strides in infrastructure development and pledged the Authority’s commitment to partnering with the state to combat food insecurity and boost agricultural participation among youths.
He revealed that the Authority had launched a partnership with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to train youths in commercial rice production and other agribusiness ventures, empowering them to become self-reliant.
Dr. Adekanbi clarified that while the structural aspect of the Ogwashi-Uku Dam has been completed, the water reticulation phase remains outstanding. Once concluded, he said, the dam would serve Aniocha South, Aniocha North, Oshimili North, and Oshimili South Local Government Areas.
He also commended the state government’s efforts in youth empowerment and agricultural transformation.
