Oborevwori Urges Team Delta to Sustain Sporting Dominance as NDSF Torch Arrives Asaba

ASABA/Nigeria: The Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) torch arrived in Asaba on Wednesday, with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori charging Team Delta to maintain the state’s legacy of dominance in national sporting events as they prepare for the inaugural edition of the festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Receiving the torch on behalf of the Governor, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to grassroots sports development and youth empowerment. He commended the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for initiating the sports festival, describing it as a visionary step toward fostering unity and talent discovery in the region.

Governor Oborevwori, through his representative, exuded confidence in Team Delta’s ability to sustain its winning streak, emphasizing that the state remains a powerhouse in Nigerian sports. “I have no doubt that our athletes will reclaim the number one position at the competition in Uyo. Just as the Niger Delta is blessed with oil, which sustains the nation, we are equally endowed with extraordinary sporting talents who have showcased Nigeria on the global stage,” he stated.

He described the festival torch as a symbol of unity, resilience, and the immense potential of the region, noting that the Niger Delta has consistently produced world-class athletes in football, athletics, wrestling, and weightlifting. “This festival is another opportunity to celebrate our sporting heritage, discover fresh talents, and reaffirm our commitment to sports as a tool for youth empowerment, peacebuilding, and economic development,” he said.

Governor Oborevwori also underscored his administration’s dedication to investing in sports infrastructure, grassroots programs, and talent development initiatives. He urged Team Delta to compete with passion, fairness, and respect, encouraging them to embody discipline, teamwork, and the spirit of excellence that defines the state.

Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, assured that the state had adequately prepared for the festival, scheduled to hold from April 1 to April 8. He disclosed that Delta’s selection process was rigorous, beginning with local government trials, progressing to state trials, and culminating in an intensive training camp for the selected athletes. “Only the best athletes will represent Delta State, competing in 17 sporting events. We are confident they will make us proud and ensure an outstanding performance at the festival,” he said.

With Team Delta’s reputation for sporting excellence, the state remains poised to reaffirm its dominance as the festival unfolds in Uyo.
