Oborevwori Congratulates NUJ on 70th Anniversary, Calls for Better Welfare for Journalists

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, lauding its role in upholding ethical journalism and nation-building.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor extended his felicitations to the NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and all members of the union, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to democracy and governance.
Oborevwori called for improved welfare for journalists, emphasizing the need for continuous learning and professional development in light of rapid advancements in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I congratulate the President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and all Nigerian journalists on this landmark occasion,” Oborevwori stated. “Journalists play a critical role in holding the government accountable and shaping national discourse, and their dedication to democracy and development must be commended.”
The governor underscored the media’s influence as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, urging journalists to maintain their commitment to truth, objectivity, and national growth.
“As key stakeholders in society, journalists wield enormous power in shaping public opinion and governance. They must continue to exercise this responsibility in a way that fosters national progress,” he added.
Oborevwori also praised the NUJ’s leadership for its unwavering defense of press freedom and advocacy for journalists’ welfare.
“The NUJ’s 70th anniversary is a testament to its resilience and commitment to journalistic excellence. The union has played a crucial role in safeguarding press freedom and promoting democratic values in Nigeria,” he said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s support for a free and vibrant press, urging journalists to remain steadfast in their pursuit of professionalism and ethical reporting.
