ASABA/Nigeria: In a strategic move aimed at fostering inclusivity and fortifying governance structures, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has announced plans to establish new chapels. The revelation came during the congress/election of The Pointer NUJ Chapel in Asaba, as NUJ Delta State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, emphasized the union’s commitment to enhancing its organizational framework.
During the election, Comrade Oyowe presided over the process that saw the emergence of Comrade Rosemary Nwaebuni as the new chairman of The Pointer NUJ Chapel. In his address, Oyowe underscored the significance of creativity and value addition in union activities, urging the newly elected leadership to embark on innovative ventures that would amplify the overall impact of the union.
Addressing financial responsibility, Oyowe stressed the importance of timely payment of dues by members. He emphasized that chapels should promptly remit payments to the appropriate structures after collecting their percentages, emphasizing the need for financial discipline within the union.
“We are committed to strengthening the structure of governance at the chapel level,” affirmed Comrade Oyowe. Recognizing the challenges faced by retired members, he highlighted the creation of new chapels as a strategic move to address these issues, stating, “A lot of our members are retired, and some of them are finding it difficult to fix themselves. We will create more chapels.”
To qualify for chapel formation, Oyowe outlined the criteria, stating that interested individuals must have a minimum of 15 professionally qualified and financially responsible members. He assured the council’s readiness to support those who meet these criteria at their point of need.
“We will not, as a council, allow ourselves to stagnate. We will create more chapels for the state council. As long as interested persons can meet the stated criteria, we will meet them at their point of need,” Oyowe affirmed.
The election witnessed a keen contest, overseen by the Delta State Council of the NUJ and witnessed by chapel members. Comrade Nwaebuni emerged as the chairman for the next three years, alongside other unopposed candidates: Comrade Innocent Osakwe as Vice Chairman, Comrade Victoria Isichei as Internal Auditor, and Comrade Tobore Umukoro as Treasurer.
In her acceptance speech, Comrade Nwaebuni pledged to run an inclusive administration that would promote and protect the interest and welfare of members. She called on all members to collaborate in the interest of the union’s growth and prosperity.
