NIPR 2024 Conference Highlights Role of Tech in Nigeria’s PR and Communications
ASABA/Nigeria: Nigerian public relations practitioners and key stakeholders have called on professionals to embrace technological advancements in digital communication to drive national socio-economic development.
This charge was echoed at the 2024 Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Directors Conference, which opened on Tuesday, 5th November, at the Mariam Babangida Leisure Park in Asaba.
Themed “Leveraging Technology and Data-Driven Insights for Digital Communication”, the conference sought to equip industry leaders with the tools to navigate a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
In her opening remark, the Chairperson of the Planning Committee, Mrs. Thelma Okoh, emphasised the conference’s role as a central forum for public relations directors to address emerging trends and issues in the industry, facilitating the exchange of best practices.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, Head of Media Relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission and Secretary General of African Public Relations and Communication Management, underscored the value that technology brings to society. He posited that data-driven insights have become foundational in public relations, enabling professionals to strengthen relationships with their audiences.
Effective public relations, Dr. Ibietan noted, relies on a combination of interpersonal skills, creativity, and a strong command of the written word. He emphasised that these skills, when paired with data insights, allow practitioners to meet the growing demands of today’s audience while maintaining credibility and trust.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Commissioner for Information Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, highlighted the critical role of digital technology in enhancing communication’s reach and effectiveness. Governor Oborevwori underscored that digital communication has the potential to shape public opinion and influence behaviour when used strategically.
“Digital communication must be intelligent and clear, ensuring that messages resonate deeply with intended audiences,” Oborevwori remarked. He stressed that it is imperative for messages to be crafted with cultural, educational, and social considerations, stating, “Tailor your message and language to be accessible, even when conveying difficult or unpopular issues.”
Governor Oborevwori praised NIPR for choosing Asaba as the conference venue, attributing this decision to growing confidence in his administration’s commitment to progress under the MORE Agenda. He encouraged NIPR members to continue refining their craft by harnessing technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, which is rapidly transforming the communication field.
Earlier, NIPR Vice President, Professor Emmanuel Dandaura, noted that the governing council had already set the agenda for the next conference to focus on innovations in public relations, encouraging members to present their accomplishments and showcase the strategies that have benefited their organisations.
Goodwill messages were also delivered from other stakeholders, and applauded NIPR’s role in fostering a resilient public relations industry ready to tackle emerging challenges in a digital age.
The 2024 NIPR Directors Conference marks a pivotal moment for the sector, rallying leaders to stay ahead of technological trends that promise to shape the future of public relations and communication in Nigeria.
