Nigeria’s First Lady Urges Religious Tolerance, Calls on Christian Leaders to Unite

ABUJA/Nigeria: In a recent meeting with a delegation from the Africa Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI) in Abuja, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, made a passionate call for religious tolerance among Christian leaders in Nigeria and across the continent.

The delegation, led by former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), included prominent figures such as Pastor Samuel Sanusi, the General Secretary/CEO of the Bible Society of Nigeria. The purpose of their visit was to brief the First Lady on the upcoming ABLI conference scheduled for October 2024.

During the meeting, Tinubu emphasized the need for unity among African leaders to tackle the various challenges facing the continent. She stressed the importance of prayer, stating, “I believe that if we don’t relent and continue to speak, because the voice of the devil is always very loud, we cannot be intimidated and try to do the best that we can because this government is not hostile to the Christian faith; we came about because of the challenge and the demand of our time.”

General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) added his perspective, noting that the youth conference had been integrated into the main program with the theme “Arise and Shine.” The focus is on cultivating a new generation of transformational leaders, featuring carefully selected resource persons.

Furthermore, Professor Jerry Gana praised the government’s reforms, expressing optimism about the potential for societal transformation through the emphasis on values. He remarked, “If we sustain it, there will be a transformation because societies are really changed through values.”

The meeting showcased a collective commitment to addressing societal challenges and fostering unity among religious leaders in Nigeria and Africa.
