Ned Nwoko Sympathizes with Victims of Agbor Tanker Explosion, Calls for Stricter Regulations

ABUJA/Nigeria: Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has extended heartfelt condolences to the families, businesses, and communities impacted by Sunday’s devastating tanker explosion in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The explosion, which occurred along the Old Asaba-Lagos Road, claimed five lives and caused extensive damage to buildings, vehicles, and businesses. Among the structures affected were an Anglican Church, First Bank, and Access Bank, leaving the community grappling with significant losses.

Describing the incident as a heavy blow to the people of Delta North, Senator Nwoko expressed deep sorrow. “This tragic event has left families mourning and businesses in ruins. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected,” he said.

The senator emphasized the need for stricter regulations governing the movement of heavy-duty vehicles, particularly those carrying hazardous materials. He called for collective action to prevent future tragedies of this nature.

Referencing a motion he proposed in May 2024, Senator Nwoko reiterated his advocacy for a nationwide ban on the daytime movement of heavy-duty vehicles. He urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enforce restrictions limiting such vehicles to nighttime operations between midnight and 6 a.m., reducing the risks associated with peak traffic hours.

He also called for the establishment of service stations near high-traffic border towns, where heavy-duty vehicles could rest before embarking on midnight journeys. According to him, such measures would minimize congestion and enhance road safety, ensuring the well-being of communities and road users.

Senator Nwoko concluded by urging all stakeholders to collaborate on implementing these preventive strategies, underscoring the importance of safeguarding lives and livelihoods in the region.
