ASABA/Nigeria: Concerns over perceived oppression from various levels of government have prompted a clarion call for self-development within the Ndokwa/Ukwuani federal constituency.

This urgent plea was echoed by multiple speakers at the recently concluded 2nd Dr. P.C. Obdoni Memorial Lecture, held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, under the theme “Ndokwa: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.”

The event took place at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Asaba with keynote address delivered by Prof Chukwujindu M.A. Iwegbue,  professor of Analytical Environment Chemistry at the Delta State University, Abraka.

Engr. (Dr.) G.O.C Amuchi, the chairman of the occasion, set the tone by emphasizing the need for unity in projecting the culture and people of Ndokwa, steering away from division and animosity. Amuchi fondly recalled the late Dr. Obadoni’s significant contributions to the region’s development, noting his unwavering commitment to addressing the area’s needs and demands.

Pharmacist Paul Enebeli, former President General of Ndokwa Neku Union, NNU, also weighed in, expressing gratitude to the organizers for honouring the legacy of the Ndokwa Study Group’s founder.

Enebeli advocated for a unified voice representing Ndokwa’s demands, stressing the importance of negotiation and engagement with governments at every level to attain the desired outcomes.

However, the keynote speaker, Prof Chukwujindu M.A. Iwegbue, directed a pointed message at the Ndokwa elites and youth, admonishing them for deviating from the region’s legacy of prioritizing social development. He particularly criticized the male youth for veering toward a ‘get-rich-quick’ mentality, urging them to redirect their focus towards more sustainable pursuits.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Ndokwa Study Group, Dr. Norris Ovili, highlighted that despite Dr. P.C. Obadoni’s commendable efforts in developing Ndokwaland, the region still faces neglect and challenges that hinder progress.

The event also featured a discussion panel comprising Dr. Bonnyface Opia, Engr Faith Nwadish, and other distinguished personalities, moderated by Prof Chukwuemeka O. Ojieh, Secretary General of the NNU.

The engaging discourse attracted a diverse audience, including prominent figures and residents from Ndokwa, representing various walks of life.

The 2nd Dr. P.C. Obdoni Memorial Lecture served as a platform to spotlight the urgent need for concerted efforts toward self-development, unity, and engagement with governmental bodies to propel Ndokwa/Ukwuani federal constituency towards a more empowered and prosperous future.
