MAY DAY: Delta Governor Promises Committee to Address Workers’ Salary Demands

ASABA/Nigeria: In an address at the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has pledged to establish a committee to discuss workers’ calls for a salary increase amidst the prevailing economic challenges in the country. Speaking at the event held at the Cenotaph, Asaba, Governor Oborevwori lauded the state’s workers for their support and emphasized his administration’s commitment to their welfare.

He reassured them of his dedication to resolving issues such as the inadvertent omission of certain workers from promotion arrears payments, promising to explore solutions within the government’s resource constraints.

Governor Oborevwori stated, “I have listened attentively to your requests and I have taken note of same; they are, no doubt, legitimate demands and as a responsible government, I will deliberate with my team on how best to address them within the limits of resources available to us.

“He highlighted his administration’s efforts in prioritizing worker welfare, citing initiatives such as the payment of salary arrears and facilitating funds to address pension and gratuity backlog.

Despite challenges, he affirmed his administration’s determination to drive infrastructural development and enhance the state’s economic prosperity.

The Governor’s remarks were met with appreciation from labour leaders, including State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, who commended Governor Oborevwori for attending the Workers’ Day celebration in person.

The labour leaders expressed gratitude for the Governor’s commitment to worker welfare and pledged their support for his administration’s agenda.However, they also appealed for consideration for workers omitted from promotion arrears payments, urging the Governor to address the issue promptly.

Comrade Ofobruku stressed the importance of political leaders fulfilling their promises to workers, emphasizing the significance of accountability in governance.

The 2024 May Day celebration, themed “PEOPLE FIRST,” was marked by a vibrant display of solidarity among various affiliate unions, reflecting the collective commitment to workers’ rights and welfare in Delta State.
