ASABA/Nigeria: Immediate past Commissioner for Water Resources Development, Hon Samuel Mariere, has lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s recent triumph at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal as a resounding victory for democracy and the rule of law.
Hon Mariere, a seasoned Lawyer and two-term Member of the Delta State House of Assembly, expressed his profound satisfaction with the tribunal’s verdict, declaring it an unwavering affirmation of the will of the people who had turned out in droves on Election Day to cast their votes in favour of the PDP candidate, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.
With conviction, the former Lawmaker called the APC candidate in the election, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who had contested the outcome in the tribunal, to gracefully accept the tribunal’s decision and join the millions of well-meaning Deltans and Nigerians in congratulating his political counterpart, Sheriff Oborevwori.
Mariere underscored the significance of the victory for Delta Central and the broader Urhobo Nation, emphasizing that both the triumphant Governor and the immediate past Deputy President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are esteemed sons of the Urhobo Nation.
He earnestly advised Ovie Omo-Agege to lay down his legal pursuits, heed the voices of reason, and forgo the entreaties of self-serving individuals urging him to appeal the tribunal’s verdict for the 2023 Delta State Gubernatorial Election.
Furthermore, while urging the former Secretary to the State Government to collaborate with Rt Hon Oborevwori in advancing the state, Mariere highlighted that Omo-Agege’s wealth of experience holds great value for the Governor’s Advancing Delta Project.
The two-term Lawmaker also stressed that Governor Oborevwori’s MORE agenda embodies the essence of good governance, necessitating the support of crucial stakeholders in Delta State, including a Deltan who has held the position of Deputy President of the Senate.
Mariere remarked, “Interestingly, the two Excellencies, Sheriff and Ovie, are brothers, friends, and true sons of Urhobo Nation. The protracted legal battles have inflicted considerable harm and must cease. Prominent sons and daughters must unite in calling for an end to further litigation regarding the occupancy of the Government House as Governor.
“Through divine grace and the majority of Deltans’ votes, Sheriff was chosen and should be wholeheartedly supported. No one can thwart God’s will and mercy. These legal battles have sown discord among the Urhobos and must not persist.”
Continuing, Hon Mariere implored Ovie Omo-Agege to embrace peace and extend congratulations to Sheriff for his victory, emphasizing that it is a win-win situation for their people, and history will remember him kindly for doing so. He also cautioned against those pressuring him to appeal the judgment, asserting that they do not have Delta State’s best interests, particularly those of the Urhobo Nation, at heart.
In the same breath, the former Commissioner and member of the Delta State Executive Council extended his appeal to the two other gubernatorial candidates, Chief Kenneth Gbagi and Ken Pela, urging them to wholeheartedly accept Sheriff Oborevwori’s emergence as Governor of Delta State and support his efforts to develop the region.
Hon Mariere expressed gratitude to Deltans for their unwavering support of the Oborevwori administration and implored them to continue their steadfast backing. He reassured the public that the Governor has the best interests of the state at heart and urged for patience and understanding as he endeavours to realize his vision for a greater Delta State.
