Isoko North Council to Begin Enforcement of Anti-Open Grazing Law December 22
OZORO/Nigeria: The Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area in Delta State, Godwin Ogorugba, has announced that his administration will commence enforcement of the state’s anti-open grazing law on December 22, 2024.
Ogorugba called on security agencies, vigilantes, traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with the law.
Speaking during a security and peace committee meeting held at the council’s executive chamber in Ozoro on Tuesday, Ogorugba underscored the importance of implementing the law to address recurring clashes between herders and farmers. The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, community presidents-general, security agency heads, vigilante groups, leaders of Fulani herders, and members of the Arewa community.
The Delta State government enacted the anti-open grazing law in 2021 to prohibit the open grazing of livestock across the state. Ogorugba stressed that the law is a proactive step towards resolving herders-farmers crises, which have led to significant losses of lives, property, and agricultural activities in recent years.
“We must take decisive measures to prevent further destruction caused by open grazing,” Ogorugba said. “Herders and livestock owners must begin purchasing or leasing land for ranching their cattle, goats, and sheep before December 22, 2024. Open grazing is no longer acceptable; you cannot use your business to destroy another person’s livelihood.”
The chairman expressed optimism that the enforcement of the law would promote peaceful coexistence between Isoko North residents and Fulani herders. “This development is crucial in addressing long-standing conflicts and fostering harmony in Isoko North and the state at large,” he added.
Ogorugba also revealed that the Delta State anti-open grazing law provides for the establishment of a task force to oversee its implementation. He reiterated the need for cooperation from all stakeholders, stating, “The full enforcement of this law begins on December 22, 2024. I urge security agencies, vigilantes, traditional rulers, community presidents-general, and all stakeholders to comply strictly with the provisions of the law.”
The council’s initiative aligns with Delta State’s broader efforts to mitigate farmer-herder conflicts and enhance community safety.
