Isoko Council Chairmen Advocate Unity, Peace for Development

OLEH/Nigeria: The chairmen of Isoko South and Isoko North Local Government Areas in Delta State, Friday Ovoke Warri and Godwin Ogorugba, have called on the people of the Isoko nation to prioritise unity, peace, and love as foundations for meaningful development.

The council chairmen made the appeal on Monday during a meeting held at the Isoko South Council Secretariat in Oleh. The gathering, aimed at fostering cohesion between the two councils, brought together community leaders to deliberate on ways to strengthen the bonds within the Isoko nation.

Emphasising the importance of harmony, Warri and Ogorugba jointly asserted that development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of division and discord. They urged community leaders, particularly the president generals of Isoko South and Isoko North, to champion initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

The chairmen also noted that unity within the Isoko nation would encourage Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who has consistently prioritised peace, to deepen investment in the area through social amenities and infrastructural development.

“We commend the community leaders for their commitment to fostering peace and unity within the Isoko nation. It is only through collaboration and understanding that we can attract further developmental strides to our communities,” Warri and Ogorugba stated.

At the meeting, the president generals of various communities deliberated on the rotational leadership structure for the Isoko Development Union (IDU) youth wing. Adonis Ubuwere, President General of the Irri Federated Union, highlighted the foundational principle of alternating the youth wing presidency between Isoko South and Isoko North. According to him, this arrangement, agreed upon on December 25, 2019, was designed to ensure inclusivity and prevent conflicts among the youth.

Ubuwere emphasised that rotational leadership promotes fairness and strengthens unity, urging all stakeholders to uphold the agreement. The meeting resolved that the IDU youth wing presidency should remain rotational between the two local government areas to maintain balance and equitable representation.

The council also called on the President General of the IDU, Chris Akpotu, to immediately constitute an electoral committee to organise free and fair elections for the youth wing, with a deadline set for December 15, 2024.

The gathering concluded with a collective agreement among community leaders to prioritise collaboration and inclusivity in governance, reaffirming their dedication to the vision of a unified and prosperous Isoko nation.
