INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: Delta Commissioner Urges Women To Strive For Gender Equality

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Flora Alatan, has admonished women to continue in the fight for a gender equal world.

The Women Commissioner made this statement in her opening remarks as she marked the 2022 International Women’s Day celebrations with the theme ‘break the bias’ held at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

The commissioner appreciated the women for their massive turnout and advised them to believe in a diverse yet equitable and inclusive world, free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination, and where gender difference was valued and celebrated.

Alatan speaking on the theme, said that women worldwide were saying ‘enough is enough’ and the bias must stop especially as women had been proven to excel anywhere, they were given the opportunity.

She extolled the Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for finding the Chief Judge and the President of the Customary Court of Appeal in the state worthy to be women, advising women to learn to love and appreciate themselves.

She also praised Delta State for having seven female commissioners, 12 permanent secretaries and female managing directors in a number of banks projecting them as successful women occupying sensitive vital positions in the state.

The commissioner reiterated the need for parents to raise their male and female children as equals from home, saying that the practice would go a long way in breaking the bias.

Pastor Bridget Affia, who gave a lecture on gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow, explained that women together, could forge an equality that could break the bias and create a fair, just and equitable arrangement for the woman in politics and governance.

Goodwill messages were given by the Omu of Okpanam, Obi Dr Martha Dunkwu, Mrs Lucy Okenna. a representative of Society of Women Accountants Nigeria, Delta State Chapter and a representative of FIDA.
