ABUJA/Nigeria: The Secretariat and Office of the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have taken swift action in response to a disturbing incident at Maitama District Hospital. A woman’s tragic death, allegedly due to negligence and medical team failure, has prompted an immediate and comprehensive investigation.
In a statement released by Badaru Salisu Yakasai, Assistant Director of Information at the Health Services and Environment, FCT, the office announced the formation of an independent investigative panel, involving the Nigeria Police and various stakeholders. This panel aims to uncover the truth surrounding the woman’s untimely demise.
The statement revealed that the office became aware of the incident through information, including video footage, detailing the woman’s unfortunate passing. It alleges that the victim arrived at the Maitama District Hospital at approximately 8:35 p.m. on September 26, 2023.
Upon receiving the news of the woman’s death, the Secretariat and Mandate Secretary, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, expressed their condolences to the grieving family. Dr. Fasawe took immediate action, personally visiting the Maitama District Hospital around 1:00 a.m. on September 29, 2023. She also contacted the Medical Director of the facility, Dr. Imuentinyan Igbinovia, requesting an unscheduled meeting at the hospital.
During this meeting, Dr. Igbinovia provided a verbal report on the incident, stating that the victim had been brought in already deceased. To ensure clarity and transparency, the Mandate Secretary requested an autopsy and preparations for a Coroner’s Inquest to determine both the cause and circumstances of the woman’s death.
The statement quoted Dr. Igbinovia as saying, “In the circumstances, and for clarity, the Secretary requested an autopsy and preparation for a Coroner’s Inquest to ascertain both the cause and circumstances of the death of the victim.”
The Secretariat has remained actively engaged in communication with relevant parties, including the family, the Police, and FCCPC (Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission), with a strong commitment to ensuring a thorough and just investigation. Consequently, the Secretariat has established an independent investigative panel, involving the Nigerian Police and other stakeholders, to fully examine the case and ensure justice is served.
Additionally, it was revealed that the victim had been thrown out of a moving vehicle and was taken to the hospital by Good Samaritans. In light of this incident, the statement urged the general public to exercise caution and vigilance while calling upon security agencies to enhance security and protection measures throughout the FCT.
While awaiting the results of the investigations, the Secretariat appealed for patience and discretion, emphasizing the importance of allowing due process to be completed.
