Imegwu Questions Eight-Hour Police Detention Over Protest Against NNU Polls

ASABA/Nigeria: Former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olisa Imegwu, was on Tuesday invited by the Delta State Police Command for questioning over the contentious election to usher in a new executive for the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU). His invitation followed widespread protests by Ndokwa sons and daughters against the perceived interference of some politicians in the process.
He stated that his invitation was after he had attended the Screening for the election,
Imegwu, who arrived at the Police Headquarters at about 1 p.m., told Ndokwa Reporters that he was still at the station as of 8:40 p.m., working to facilitate his bail on self-recognition. He expressed surprise at the police invitation, insisting that he was only exercising his legal right to protest against what he described as an unjust electoral process. He revealed that his attempt to submit a petition to the Chairman of the Election Committee was unsuccessful, as both the chairman and committee members were nowhere to be found.
The election dispute had been building amid reports of undue political interference. Ndokwa Reporters’ “Behind the Headlines with Emmanuel Enebeli” had previously detailed allegations that some politicians were attempting to impose a new leadership on the NNU despite the union’s longstanding internal challenges. Tensions escalated when a meeting in Utagba Unor, hosted at the home of Rear Admiral Mike Onah (rtd), OON, took a dramatic turn. Out of about 100 attendees, 14 were reportedly taken into a separate room for five hours before emerging to declare that Imegwu should step down—an outcome that contradicted the initial purpose of the gathering.
The former Speaker decried the situation, questioning why he was held for eight hours simply for seeking justice in what he considered an unfair election. He claimed he was made to wait for the Commissioner of Police without any clear explanation, further fueling speculations of high-level political influence in the crisis.
The escalating controversy has raised serious questions about the credibility of the NNU electoral process, with many demanding a fair, transparent, and interference-free leadership transition. Ndokwa Reporters can confirm that five candidates are vying for the position of President General, including three independent aspirants and two backed by political interests.
Efforts to ascertain the reason behind the police invitation extended to Imegwu were made by reaching out to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, via phone call, SMS, and WhatsApp. However, as of the time of filing this report, he had yet to respond.
