Ijaw Federal Lawmaker Denounces Killing of Soldiers, Calls for Justice

ABUJA/Nigeria: In a vehement condemnation of the tragic events unfolding in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, Hon. Nicolas Mutu, representing Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency, has decried the killing of 16 soldiers by irate youths.

As the Chairman of the Gas Committee and the Southern Nigeria Caucus in the House of Representatives, Hon. Mutu voiced his outrage through a statement issued by his Media Office on Sunday.

Describing the incident as “barbaric and inhuman,” the lawmaker expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, including a Lieutenant Colonel, two Majors, and a Captain of the Nigerian Army, who were on a peacekeeping mission in the Urhobo community.

In his emotionally charged statement, he called upon all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring they face the full weight of justice. He emphasized the importance of not allowing such criminals to evade punishment, serving as a deterrent to potential future offenders.

Extending his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and the entire Nigerian Armed Forces, the law maker urged for prayers for the repose of their souls, cruelly taken while dutifully serving their nation.

However, he strongly rebuked the misrepresentation of facts by some sections of the press, particularly those wrongly associating the Ijaw community of Okoloba with the heinous crime.

“The Ijaw people have no connection to this despicable act of violence,” Hon. Mutu clarified. “The facts, readily available to the appropriate security agencies, implicate the indigenes of Okuama in this senseless killing.”

He further denounced the irresponsible journalism that perpetuated false narratives, urging retractions and apologies from those responsible for the misleading reports.

“I stand firm in condemning any attempts to malign the innocent Ijaw people,” He asserted. “It is imperative that the true perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice to uphold the integrity of our nation’s security.”

He reinterated reiterated his condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice for the fallen soldiers, while calling for unity and solidarity in the face of such tragedies.
