ALAKA/Nigeria: Uvwie Council Chairman, Chief Anthony Ofoni, has emphasized the critical importance of healthcare, describing it as a cornerstone of societal development.

Speaking on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Alaka during the flag-off of the 2024 Measles Campaign and Vaccination Exercise, Chief Ofoni highlighted the well-known saying, “health is wealth,” underscoring its relevance to the efforts of the government.

He noted that one of the key indicators of a developing society is the health status of its citizens, particularly its children, who represent the future. “Our children are our future, and that’s why this vaccination campaign is so important,” Ofoni stressed.

Citing the World Health Organization (WHO), the council chairman reminded parents that measles remains one of the most contagious airborne diseases, responsible for more child deaths than any other vaccine-preventable illness. He expressed concern over the high mortality rates caused by measles, emphasizing the need for children in Uvwie to be vaccinated to avoid such fatal consequences.

“The high rate of deaths from measles is alarming. It is crucial that we vaccinate our children to protect them from this deadly disease,” Ofoni stated.

Chief Ofoni extended his gratitude to Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his support in approving the vaccination exercise. He also called on healthcare workers to ensure the campaign reaches every corner of the community. In a message to parents, guardians, schools, and religious institutions, he urged full cooperation with health workers.

“I urge all parents, schools, churches, mosques, and community members to grant access to health workers. The health of our children is paramount, and we must do everything to safeguard their future,” he concluded.
