GOVERNOR Sheriff Oborevwori Appoints Veteran Journalist Norbert Chiazor as Executive Assistant on Media

ASABA/Nigeria: In a significant move aimed at bolstering his administration’s media outreach, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has appointed veteran journalist, communication scholar, and former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council, Comrade Norbert Chiazor, as the Executive Assistant (EA) on Media. This pivotal announcement was made in an official statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu.

Comrade Norbert Chiazor, a distinguished media practitioner, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously held the position of Deputy General Manager and Head of News and Current Affairs at the Delta Broadcasting Service in Warri before his departure from service in 2019. Chiazor’s illustrious journalism career began at the Bendel Broadcasting Service in Benin City, showcasing his dedication to the field.

Throughout his career, Chiazor has been a widely traveled journalist, contributing to both local and international publications. His bylines graced prestigious newspapers such as The Guardian, National Concord (now defunct), Mail & Guardian of South Africa, Irish Times, and The Sowetan. He even achieved the honor of publishing articles in the globally renowned International Herald Tribune based in New York.

Comrade Norbert Chiazor, often affectionately referred to as a “wordsmith” for his informative and elegant writings, hails from Idumuje Unor in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State. Notably, he previously served as the Executive Assistant Media during the second tenure of the immediate past governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

As a graduate of English/Literature from the University of Benin, Mr. Chiazor also holds a degree in Mass Communication from Delta State University and a Master’s Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).

During his tenure as Chairman of the Delta NUJ from 2011 to 2017, Comrade Norbert Chiazor served an unprecedented six-year term, marked by sterling performance that brought prestige and glory to the union.

In response to this appointment, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) expressed its gratitude to Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. In a statement issued by the National Secretary of the NUJ, Mr. Leman Shaibu, the union commended the Governor for entrusting a brilliant, thoroughbred, and outstanding journalist like Comrade Norbert Chiazor with this crucial role. The NUJ sees Chiazor as a surefooted professional who will add significant value to the government’s media operations.

The NUJ’s statement concluded by congratulating Chiazor on his new position and assuring Governor Oborevwori of the union’s unwavering support in his commitment to good governance in Delta State. This appointment solidifies the critical role of the press as a strategic partner in the administration’s efforts to provide transparency and information to the public.
