ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on football administrators in Nigeria to prioritise the nation’s interests in their decision-making processes concerning the game. The governor’s remarks were delivered by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, during the 80th annual general assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held in Asaba on Friday.
Governor Oborevwori expressed his appreciation to the NFF for selecting Delta as the host for the assembly, highlighting the state’s reputation as a peaceful and welcoming destination. He emphasised the unifying power of football in Nigeria, transcending barriers of age, religion, ethnicity, and geography.
“Nigeria is a football-loving nation, and the decisions you make as administrators will directly impact the joy or sadness of millions of Nigerians,” Oborevwori said. “As you deliberate, I urge you to put the interests of the country first. Football is not just a sport; it brings unity and pride to our people.”
He also lauded Delta State’s continued dominance in national sporting events, pointing out the recent success of the state’s athletes at the National Youth Games, where Delta secured 111 medals for the eighth consecutive victory. Oborevwori noted the state’s commitment to nurturing young talent, particularly through initiatives such as the Zenith Bank/Delta Headmasters’ Football Competition and the Principals Cup.
“Asaba is home to the FIFA-approved Stephen Keshi Stadium, where the Super Eagles have played numerous matches. Our government is dedicated to developing sports facilities and encouraging our youth to engage in sports,” he added.
In his welcome remarks, the governor encouraged attendees to explore Asaba’s tourist attractions and enjoy the local delicacies, assuring them of the city’s hospitality.
FIFA representative, Amaju Pinnick, echoed the governor’s sentiments, urging unity within the NFF for the overall growth of Nigerian football. He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for both the upcoming World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.
Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the advancement of sports, particularly football. He stressed the importance of the NFF in shaping the future of Nigerian football and urged the federation to focus on securing qualifications for the 2026 World Cup and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Enoh concluded by reminding the NFF of the government’s support, emphasising the need for deliberate efforts toward success on the international stage.
