Governor Oborevwori Lauds SUBEB Reforms, Celebrates Excellence in Primary Education

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has commended the leadership of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for implementing transformative reforms that have significantly enhanced primary education in the state.

Governor Oborevwori, represented by the Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, made this remark during the Nine Lessons and Carol event organized by SUBEB. He praised the board’s strides in improving basic education and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting SUBEB in achieving its set objectives.

“Our government is focused on ensuring Delta children become world-class human resources and global figures,” the Governor stated. He called on Deltans to embrace peace and harmony during the yuletide season, emphasizing the importance of bringing joy to others, reflecting the essence of the Christmas season.

The Governor expressed his satisfaction with the camaraderie among the Executive Chairman, members, and staff of SUBEB, applauding their collective efforts. He also commended the clergy for the inspiring words of ministration during the event and congratulated teachers recognized for their exceptional performance. “Your hard work to improve the standards of public basic education in Delta State is commendable. I urge others to strive for similar recognition,” he added.

The Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Hon. Samuel Mariere, highlighted the board’s achievements over the past year, attributing the progress to various reforms and the dedication of its personnel. Mariere noted a significant increase in enrollment in public primary schools in 2024, following a statewide awareness campaign. He assured that 2025 would witness even greater advancements in the sector.

Mariere also celebrated outstanding staff, presenting awards alongside cash gifts of ₦50,000 each to recipients. “Improving basic primary education, the foundation of all learning levels, is our primary aim—not just awarding contracts,” he emphasized.

Among the awardees were Mrs. Victoria Ogboloi of Igbuku Primary School, Ndokwa East, as Best Classroom Teacher, and Mrs. Patricia Otev of Alegbo Primary School, Uvwie, as Best Head Teacher. Other honorees included Mrs. Josephine Akperi, Best SUBEB Staff; Mrs. Marian Afor-Dumbili, Best SUBEB Director; and Pastor Dave Inoaghan from Sapele as Best Local Education Authority Secretary.

Hon. Mariere also recognized 19 retired SUBEB staff with gifts, pledging to involve them as consultants when needed. He lauded their wealth of knowledge and contributions to the board, emphasizing their continued relevance in enhancing the education system.

Mariere expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for promptly approving funds, ensuring the board’s smooth operations. “The Governor’s unwavering commitment to the growth of basic education is extraordinary,” he remarked.

The event featured Bible readings, carol songs, and ministration led by Ven. Charles Nnamchi Osemenan, Chaplain of Government House, who urged attendees to remain joyful and resist anything that brings sadness.

A special presentation of sports jerseys and a cash prize of ₦500,000 was made to Ogoma Primary School, Aniocha South, for securing third place in the UBEC Sports Football Competition.

The ceremony underscored the collective resolve to elevate Delta’s primary education system, setting the stage for more remarkable achievements in the years to come.
