OBIARUKU/Nigeria: In the wake of a ferocious rainstorm that wreaked havoc upon Obiaruku Community, the Delta State Government has launched a determined mission to alleviate the profound sufferings of the victims. Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl-Child Development, Ms. Orode Uduaghan, spearheads this crucial effort.
Ms. Uduaghan, leading a government delegation, conducted an on-the-spot assessment to gauge the extent of the damage inflicted upon the beleaguered community. Represented by Sir Stanley Rapu, Director of Humanitarian Affairs in the ministry, she expressed not only the government’s empathy but also its unwavering commitment to providing substantial succor to those grievously affected by the calamity.
“The essence of this visit is not only to sympathize with you, but also to assure you that the State Government will stand in solidarity with you during this trying period,” affirmed Commissioner Uduaghan.
The recent rain disaster has left over 75 families grappling with homelessness, a matter demanding immediate attention, according to the Commissioner. This pronouncement underscores the paramount importance of the government’s active involvement in offering robust support to families reeling from the impact of the calamitous weather event.
Guiding the government delegation through the wreckage were local officials Mr. Chucki Tutu, Special Adviser to the Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government, and Pastor Essais Okpor, Chairman of the Community’s Peace Committee. Both officials, witnessing firsthand the devastation, passionately appealed for urgent government intervention to mitigate the profound shock of sudden homelessness experienced by numerous families in Obiaruku.
One victim, bravely sharing her harrowing experience, recounted that the rainstorm struck at approximately 6 pm on that fateful day. With both her and her husband away, their four children bore the brunt of the calamity as the roof of their home was unceremoniously torn away by an unexpected whirlwind.
The ancient town of Obiaruku, on the 11th of January, found itself in the clutches of a devastating wind, resulting not only in a complete blackout but also leaving some families bereft of shelter.
The government’s swift and decisive response to this crisis, coupled with the unequivocal commitment to addressing the urgent needs of the community, serves as a poignant reminder of the essential role solidarity and assistance play in navigating and overcoming challenges during such trying times.
