FRSC Lauds Gov. Soludo’s Road Project for Improving Road Safety in Anambra
AWKA/Nigeria: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s ambitious road project for its potential to enhance road safety and reduce accidents in Anambra State.
This commendation came from Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra, during the kickoff of the 2023 Ember Months Safety Campaign in Onitsha on Thursday.
The campaign, themed “Speed Thrills But Kills, Drive Responsibly and Avoid Overloading,” seeks to raise awareness about safe driving practices.
Irelewuyi emphasized the link between road conditions and speeding, stating, “In Nigeria, available statistics show that more than 60 per cent of road traffic crash occurrences are due to speeding.” He pointed out that poor road conditions often lead to delays, prompting motorists to exceed speed limits. However, he praised Governor Soludo for his commitment to improving roads across the state, saying, “I believe that the road construction and rehabilitation are efforts and support for road safety because they will help to curb speed violation and crashes on our roads.”
The Sector Commander also outlined the objectives of the Ember Months campaign, which include sensitizing road users to drive safely, avoid overloading, and adopt a safer road culture to reduce accidents. He revealed plans to deploy technology such as Radar Guns for speed measurement and Alcolizer for drug and alcohol testing in drivers.
Irelewuyi highlighted the need for increased public awareness and enforcement during the Ember months, when traffic volume typically surges, leading to a rise in road accidents. He urged motorists to cooperate with the FRSC to reduce fatalities on the state’s roads.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, underscored the role of human errors in road crashes, stating, “90 per cent of road crashes were caused by avoidable human errors.” He urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules, including wearing seatbelts, abstaining from drinking and driving, avoiding speeding and reckless overtaking, conducting vehicle checks before hitting the road, and ensuring that children do not sit in the front seats.
Governor Soludo’s road project, coupled with the efforts of the FRSC and responsible driving by citizens, aims to make Anambra’s roads safer and reduce the incidence of accidents in the state.
