From Workers’ Pay to Public Spaces: Ogorugba Drives Reforms in Isoko North

OZORO/Nigeria: The Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Delta State, Godwin Ogorugba, has announced the commencement of the payment of the new minimum wage to council workers, starting in November. Ogorugba disclosed this during the ongoing screening of Isoko North teachers at the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) hall in Ozoro, the council’s headquarters.

He clarified that the screening exercise was not punitive but aimed at creating a comprehensive template for implementing the new wage structure, as directed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Ogorugba expressed gratitude to the Delta State Local Government Commission’s Chairman, Joseph Otiwe, and his team for facilitating the screening. He also commended the council’s civil and public servants for their unwavering support during his election, calling for continued unity and cooperation to achieve his administration’s objectives.

Speaking at the screening exercise, Joseph Otiwe praised the dedication of the council staff to advancing primary education in the area and urged patience among those yet to be screened. He thanked the Ogorugba administration for its support in driving the initiative forward.

In a separate development, the Isoko North Local Government has issued a 90-day ultimatum to traders and owners of illegal structures along major routes within the council area to vacate or face demolition. The affected routes include the Ozoro-Kwale Road, NDC, Ala Square through Hospital Road, Ozoro-Oleh, Urude Road, and the Ozoro-Owhelogbo Road.

During the inauguration of the Environmental Task Force in Ozoro, Ogorugba stressed the importance of the directive for public safety and the free flow of traffic. “Non-compliance after the deadline will result in the demolition of unauthorized structures and the seizure of goods,” he warned. Traders were urged to relocate to designated areas, as the directive is final and non-negotiable.

The task force, chaired by Emmanuel Evuera and comprising seven members, will oversee the enforcement of the directive. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Secretary to the Local Government, Vote Umukoro, and other supervisory councillors.

The council’s actions reflect its commitment to improving workers’ welfare and maintaining public order in Isoko North.
