First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Calls for Free HIV/AIDS Treatment, Advocates Women’s Health in Delta

ASABA/Nigeria: Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for free treatment programs for HIV/AIDS patients across the country, emphasizing the need for improved healthcare access. She made the appeal on Tuesday during a visit to the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council in Asaba, where she highlighted the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS, particularly on young people.
Addressing the royal fathers, Tinubu urged traditional rulers to champion health awareness campaigns, including the fight against female genital mutilation. She also introduced the ‘Flow with Confidence’ initiative, an education-focused campaign providing free sanitary pads to schoolgirls in rural areas to prevent absenteeism during menstruation.
The First Lady further disclosed that she had secured substantial funding for tuberculosis treatment as part of her commitment to public health advocacy. She reiterated her dedication to supporting vulnerable groups through donations and health interventions.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who received Tinubu in Delta, commended her initiatives and announced that she was in the state to distribute 10,000 professional kits, including scrubs and Crocs, to midwives across the South-South region under her Renewed Hope Initiative. He noted that the programme had already been implemented in the North-Central and North-West regions.
“Today marks the turn of the South-South, and Her Excellency has chosen Delta State to flag off the programme for the Niger Delta region,” Oborevwori said. “Tomorrow, she will also launch the Free-to-Shine initiative in collaboration with the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development, aimed at combating HIV/AIDS and addressing other public health challenges affecting women of reproductive age.”
Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council and Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, HRM Maj Gen Felix Mujakperuo, commended Tinubu for her visit and lauded President Bola Tinubu for the ongoing federal road projects in Delta, including the Benin-Asaba and Benin-Warri expressways, as well as the access road to the Second Niger Bridge.
“We are proud of you as a virtuous woman who stood by your husband through his political journey to the presidency,” Mujakperuo said. “Deltans respect their in-laws, and we appreciate the recognition of our governor’s efforts by the president and the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi. Governor Oborevwori has turned Delta State into a massive construction site, and he deserves a second term to complete these transformational projects.”
The First Lady was received at the Asaba International Airport by Governor Oborevwori, his wife, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, and other dignitaries, marking the beginning of her engagements in Delta State.
