MOSOGAR/Nigeria: The Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu has lamented the burning down of a block of building and vehicles of the College of Education, Mosogar which he attributed to indiscriminate bush burning
Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu who was speaking after visiting the school to ascertain the level of the havoc caused by the inferno said there was an urgent need to put a stop on indiscriminate bush burning especially during “this harmattan season” for public safety.
The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Anthony Nwokolobia, disclosed that he was saddened by the development.
He explained that the inferno which destroyed a large portion of the College grassland, a section of the building housing the Works Department of the school, and two utility vehicles, occurred on Christmas day, the 25th of December.
Expressing shock at the level of impact and damage the fire had caused the institution, the Commissioner directed the prohibition of bush burning for farming within the school environment, especially close to the buildings as that has the prospect to trigger avoidable inferno.
He assured that a board of enquiry would be constituted to unravel the remote and actual cause of the fire incident for preemptive and preventive measures to forestall future recurrence.
The Commissioner who advised against indiscriminate bush burning said that it portends danger to both human lives and property even as he called on the school management to activate preventive measures to protect government property in its custody at all times.
