ONICHA- UGBO/Nigeria: Onicha Ugbo community in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State was thrown into chaos and fear on Tuesday following the tragic news of the murder of a young man, Mr. Ifeanyi Izeke. Reports indicate that Mr. Izeke was shot dead while tending to his farm in Ikoko quarters, Ogbekenu, Onicha Ugbo.
Local sources, speaking to our correspondent, disclosed that the suspected perpetrators were Fulani herdsmen. Allegedly, Mr. Izeke was working alongside hired laborers of Northern extraction when one of them opened fire, fatally injuring him.
Tragically, Mr. Izeke succumbed to his injuries on his way to the hospital, leaving the community in mourning. This incident reignites concerns over the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the area, which have claimed the lives of three young men in the past two years.
In response to Mr. Izeke’s killing, enraged youths, particularly from Ogbekenu, mobilized for peaceful protests, demanding justice from the federal government. Mr. Ifechukwude Osedunnme, speaking on behalf of the youths, emphasized the need for immediate intervention to address the escalating violence.
Amidst the growing tension, the town’s Monarch, Obi Chukwumalieze, convened an emergency meeting, appealing to the youths to refrain from violence and allow law enforcement agencies to handle the situation. Additionally, the Monarch, in collaboration with the local police, issued a two-week ultimatum for Hausa/Fulani individuals residing in the bush areas to relocate to the town or face legal consequences.
The community remains on edge as authorities work to quell tensions and apprehend those responsible for the senseless killing of Mr. Ifeanyi Izeke.
